Preservation Roundtable Rescheduled!

Preservation Roundtable Rescheduled!

Coming Sunday, May 14:

Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival Presents

Whispering Sidewalks

at The Sofia, 2700 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento

Starring Sacramento's Own Betty Inada

While we apologize for the abrupt change in plans, Preservation Sacramento's Board has decided to reschedule our quarterly Roundtable because we recently learned that the Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival had secured a copy of Whispering Sidewalks, Japan's first jazz musical, produced in 1936 and starring Sacramento-born jazz singer Betty Inada! This will be the first showing of the film in Sacramento in many years.

Betty Inada, who grew up performing with Japantown's Nisei jazz bands in Sacramento, dreamed of stardom, but could not find it in the United States. She traveled to Japan, where she became part of the Japanese bata-kusai ("rancid butter") jazz scene, achieving her dream of stardom far from home. Whispering Sidewalks is a semi-fictionalized musical based on Betty's quest for fame and success.

The showing of Whispering Sidewalks, the second film of a three-film program on Sunday, starts at 1:00 PM, followed by a live performance by the Harley White Jr. Orchestra. William Burg, president of Preservation Sacramento, will also give a brief talk about Betty's life and Sacramento's Nisei jazz scene of the 1930s during the interlude between the film and the performance. Preservation Sacramento will be a sponsor of the Sacramento Asian Pacific Film Festival. All-day tickets to this event are $45, including three films, accompanied by live musical performances.

We'll send an update for the rescheduled Preservation Roundtable, to be held later this year at the Nisei VFW Hall in downtown Sacramento.
